Plants use photosynthesis, a process that converts water, sunlight and CO2 into basic substances that support their growth and nutrition. The more CO2 in the air, the more active and successful plants are at absorbing CO2. Faster CO2 conversion leads to faster and more intense growth. Plants also take up CO2 through small pores on the underside of leaves called vents. When CO2 levels are higher, plants do not need to open these pores as often or as wide, resulting in less water loss and less chance of absorbing critically harmful air pollutants.
