When cleaning glass water pipes with brushes, the glass surface is repeatedly - albeit hardly visible for the time being - mechanically injured.

On the one hand, this affects the optics over time and on the other hand the lifespan of a pipe. Since the surface is no longer smooth due to the scratches, the dirt sits faster and stronger in these finest recesses. In addition, the risk of breakage is increased by the surface injury.
